What is dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are chemical or physical substances, materials or products which, under certain conditions, may endanger human life, health and the environment during transportation.

Transportation of goods with a hazard class requires special attention and compliance with strict safety rules and regulations. Classification of dangerous goods is usually defined by international organizations such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and others depending on the mode of transport.

General features of transportation of goods with a hazard class

  • 1. Labeling and packaging

    Dangerous goods must be properly labeled and packaged in accordance with international standards. This includes the use of special signs, labels and packaging materials capable of preventing the leakage or explosion of hazardous substances

  • 2. Documentation

    Carriers of dangerous goods are required to provide correct documentation such as hazard declarations, certificates and handling instructions. This is important to ensure the safe transportation and handling of the cargo

  • 3. Transport requirements

    Transport used to delivery dangerous goods must meet safety standards. This may include special containers, tanks or technical accident prevention systems

  • 4. Checks and inspections

    Transport and containers used for dangerous goods must undergo regular technical checks and inspections to ensure they meet safety standards

  • 5. Route

    Route planning for dangerous goods takes into account the specifics of transportation in areas where there may be restrictions or risks, such as the presence of sensitive facilities or populated areas

These measures are taken to minimize risks and ensure the safe transport of dangerous goods, which is a logistics priority

In addition to class classification, cargoes are further subdivided into UN or UN identifier numbers - this is a four-digit number that determines the danger of a substance or product in international transportation and is a mandatory point for marking in the transportation of dangerous goods. It should be taken into account that one UN code may include cargoes, the requirements for transportation of which are different.

UN numbers are 3,534 and are assigned by experts of the United Nations Committee on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

Also according to international norms, ADR and the UN Model Regulations, when transporting dangerous substances and objects, important (besides the UN identifier) are:

  • name and description of the cargo;
  • the class or subclass of the hazard;
  • information on additional hazards and special provisions;
  • group and packing information;
  • restrictions on the volume of transportation;
  • optimum type of transport and special packaging

MSDS

Attribution to classes and UN number is carried out on the basis of MSDS - Safety Data Sheet for Chemical Products. This document contains information on the main characteristics of the chemical substance, conditions of safe use, storage, transportation and disposal. It is a mandatory document for transportation.

MSDS is made by the manufacturer of chemical products in the language where the substance is to be delivered. The MSDS must be registered before the chemical product is placed on the market. The MSDS is not only for chemicals and materials, but also for devices that contain chemicals, such as batteries and accumulators.

The safety data sheet contains the following information:

  • 1. Identification. Name of the product, manufacturer, contact details
  • 2. Hazard identification. Health and environmental hazards.
  • 3. Composition and ingredient information. Lists the chemical components of the substance and their concentration.
  • 4. First aid measures. Describes the actions to be taken if a person is exposed to a chemical substance, symptoms, and necessary treatment.
  • 5. Fire Fighting Measures. Extinguishing methods associated with the material, protective equipment for firefighters, and hazards that may be encountered.
  • 6. Emergency release measures. Describes steps needed in the event of a spill or leak of a substance, emergency procedures, protective equipment, containment methods to prevent environmental damage.
  • 7. Handling and Storage. Recommendations for the safe handling of the substance, as well as instructions for storage of the substance.
  • 8. Exposure Control/Personal Protection. This section describes measures to limit worker exposure to the substance, such as recommendations for specific types of ventilation, personal protective equipment.
  • 9. Physical and Chemical Properties. Technical data about the substance: appearance, odor, boiling and melting points, flash point, water solubility, and other characteristics.
  • 10. Stability and reactivity. Information on the stability of the substance under normal conditions, as well as on any material
  • 11. Toxicological information. This part describes the health effects of exposure to the substance, including immediate effects and any long-term health problems it may cause.
  • 12. Environmental information. This section provides information on the environmental effects of the substance, including toxicity to aquatic organisms, persistence and degradability, and its bioaccumulation potential.
  • 13. Disposal Recommendations. Recommendations for the proper disposal, recycling, or disposal of the chemical or its container.
  • 14. Transportation Information. Recommendations for the safe transportation of the substance, including any special precautions that should be taken.
  • 15. Regulatory Information. Additional information about the substance as required by specific regulations. This may include regulations from various jurisdictions such as international, federal, state, or local.
